Tame Wairere Iti (born 1952) is known as an activist, artist, uncle, father and grandfather. He grew up in Te Urewera and has links to Ngāi Tūhoe, Te Arawa, Ngāti Wairere and Ngāti Hauā. Often a divisive figure in the public domain, Tame has been involved in many high profile protests including movements against the Vietnam War, Apartheid in South Africa and issues around the confiscation of Māori land. Central to Itis philosophies is the concept of Mana Motuhake which is often translated as self determination. Artist’s Statement : David PearceA diaspora describes a scattered population with a common origin. Individuals within a diaspora typically develop hybrid identities as one imagines them selves as connected to multiple contexts. In New Zealand, the term diaspora is normally associated with migrant minorities rather than the established dominant group. This exhibition explores the notion that first hand experience of migration is not necessary for migrant’s descendants to develop a sense of displacement and hybridity. A type of diaspora can develop as part of an imagined connection to places recalled by a parent or grandparent. These family histories play a significant role in the formation of a child’s identity.
